President’s Day Cherry Pie Recipe for Kids

cherry recipe

Celebrate President’s Day with a myth surrounding George Washington. Our nation’s first president is known for many things, one of which is chopping down a cherry tree. As the story goes, the then-6-year-old George Washington took a brand new hatchet and chopped down his father’s beloved cherry tree.

When asked by his father if he was the one who cut down the tree, he famously said, “I cannot tell a lie.” The historical truth of the story has never been proven. But, it’s still a fun tale to tell. After talking about the mythology of George and the cherry tree, use the fruit (cherries) to make your very own cherry mini pies. Instead of using the oven (which is a no-go for your child), this is a no-bake recipe. Your child can help you with the mix, measuring and of course, eating!

Ingredients:

  • Pitted cherries without their stems – fresh or frozen (you will need to warm frozen fruit)
  • Small-sized/individual ready-made pie crusts
  • Whipped topping
  • Vanilla or chocolate pudding

How-To Steps:

  1. Spoon a generous dollop of pudding into each pie crust. Use the back of the spoon to smooth it down.
  2. Mix the cherries with the whipped topping. The amount you use depend on what your child chooses. Ask her to experiment, adding tablespoon by tablespoon of topping until she feels like the cherry-cream balance is to her liking.
  3. Add the cherry and whipped topping mix on top of the pudding.
  4. Top with a fresh cherry!
